Cette affection [la variole], très contagieuse, se manifeste par une éruption vésiculo-pustuleuse généralisée à l'origine de cicatrices indélébiles (36, p.76). On distingue deux variétés de variole : la variole majeure (variola major) qui est une variole typique provoquant chez les personnes non vaccinées un taux de mortalité de 20 % ou plus et pouvant entraîner une cécité, et la variole mineure (variola minor), forme de la maladie responsable d'un taux de létalité inférieur à 1 %.
